GWU’s Shaquille Riddick Honored for Grid Iron Effort Against Marshall University

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb’s Shaquille Riddick was named honorable mention FCS Defensive Line Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) for his efforts at Marshall.

Riddick (Akron, Ohio / Buchtel HS) finished the game with seven total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and two pressures against the Thundering Herd. Riddick already has more sacks (3.0 for minus-26 yards) through two games in 2013 than he had in his previous 19 career games at defensive end.

The 6-foot-7, 240-pounder has collected 13 total tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks through two games this season, leading the Big South Conference in both tackles for loss and sacks per game. He has five quarterback hurries this season after pacing the Big South Conference with 10 in 2012.

In his last three games, dating back to the season finale against Presbyterian in 2012, Riddick has totaled 23 tackles (11 solo), 6.0 tackles for loss, four sacks and eight quarterback hurries. He earned preseason second-team All-Big South Conference honors from Phil Steele’s College Football Preview heading into the 2013 campaign.

Riddick ranks No. 6 nationally in sacks per game and No. 11 nationally in tackles for loss per game.

Gardner-Webb (1-1) faces another stiff test on Saturday, hosting No. 15 Richmond (1-1) at 6:00 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.

The Spiders dropped a heartbreaker this past weekend, with N.C. State winning 23-21 in Raleigh on a late field goal. Richmond rolled past Gardner-Webb, 41-8, in the second game of the 2012 season in Richmond, Va.
