A Journey at Sea Becomes a Thrilling Adventure for Young Orphan

By Alice Byrd ’18, Intern for Communications

Peter and the Starcatcher PosterBOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gardner-Webb University’s Department of Theatre Arts will present its latest production next month. Rick Elice’s play, “Peter and the Starcatcher,” will be performed in Dover Theatre in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, located on the GWU main campus. Performances will be held April 12-15. A matinee performance will be scheduled for school groups who pre-register.

The play is based on the 2004 novel, “Peter and the Starcatchers,” by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by an evil king. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training. Molly soon realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a powerful celestial substance that must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates—led by a villain determined to claim the treasure—the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on April 12-14, and at 2:30 p.m. on April 15.  Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students, and free for GWU students with an ID. GWU faculty and staff receive two free tickets with an ID. For tickets, contact Shelia Toney at or 704-406-4656.
