BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—A senior in the Gardner-Webb University Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program recently received a grant from the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA). Elizabeth “Liz” Hawes of Valdese, N.C., was awarded the NCAPA Endowment Student Grant by H. Truett Smith, NCAPA President. The grants are given to one student from each PA program in North Carolina. Applicants must be a student member of NCAPA and entering or enrolled in their clinical year.

Hawes decided on a medical career at a young age. She believes choosing to work in medicine is as much a passion as it is a calling. “The road is not easy and with groundbreaking discoveries happening faster than ever, it requires a person to essentially become a student for life,” she observed.

She chose GWU’s program after attending an open house with a friend. “On my interview, I can distinctly recall how well the faculty seemed to get along with each other,” she related. “They fostered an environment of learning yet having a good time was not off limits.”

The professors continue to impress her with their commitment to students. “They are always interested in the feedback we have to give,” Hawes assessed “They literally sink themselves into the material as much or more than we do. There is a comfort in knowing my professors study just like I do. We also have an open door policy where students can pop into an office to simply say hello or spend time with a troublesome concept.”
