“Keeping Learning Alive” Conference Scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6 at Tucker Student Center

Steve Lassiter

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University School of Education will conduct its annual conference, Keeping Learning Alive, with keynote speaker Steve Lassiter, North Carolina Principal of the Year, on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Tucker Student Center.  The purpose of this free event is to facilitate discourse between administrators, practicing teachers, and pre-service teachers, and provide them support in continued professional growth, while sharing practices for a broad spectrum of educators.

“We are planning a variety of presentations,” said Dr. Jason Parker, assistant professor in the GWU School of Education and an organizer of the event.  “Some presentations will be targeted to specific populations, while others are crafted for general audiences.”

Lassiter serves as principal at Pactolus School in Pitt County, N.C. Last May, he was named the 2015 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year. State Superintendent June Atkinson commended Lassiter on his selection. “Strong principals support their staff and students, and build successful school environments,” she said. “Steve makes a special effort to celebrate all of his teachers’ accomplishments and consistently provides positive affirmation to students so that they make good choices and work hard toward academic success. As a result, students and teachers look forward to coming to school each day.”

This year’s conference themes are teacher advocacy and teacher leadership. Attendees will be awarded continuing education credit.

Lassiter earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education child studies in 2004 and a master’s degree in school administration in 2010, both from East Carolina University. In 2013, he earned an education specialist degree from North Carolina State University and is currently pursuing his doctorate in educational leadership at N.C. State.
