GWU Distinguished Artists Series Continues with Renowned Soprano

Jeryl Cunningham-Fleming to Perform Nov. 16

photo of soprano Jeryl Cunningham-FlemingBOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Jeryl Cunningham-Fleming, soprano, will present “Stand the Storm: Anthems, Hymns and Spirituals of Faith and Hopefor Gardner-Webb University’s Distinguished Artists Series on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. Dr. Cindy Swicegood will provide accompaniment on the piano. The free concert is open to the public and will be in Hamrick Hall’s Blanton Auditorium on the main campus.

Cunningham-Fleming has been praised for her “gorgeous, full voice” by the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky. She has presented concerts throughout the United States, South America, Europe, and Japan.

She has performed an exciting and unusual repertoire that embraces composers ranging from Bach to Ellington. In addition, she is an outstanding interpreter of traditional music from her rich African American heritage. She is the winner of the Canticum Dominium Competition, and was second place in the Advanced Upper Division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Eastern Regional Auditions.

As a choral director, she served as associate conductor of the Boys Choir of Harlem; associate conductor of the Girls Choir of Harlem; and currently, she is the assistant director of the American Spiritual Ensemble. As a teacher, she has taught music to children and senior citizens and has provided training to up-and-coming vocalists. Finally, as a researcher, Cunningham-Fleming is dedicated to the study and musical practices within the African American church.
