Reeves, superintendent of the Surry County (N.C.) School district, was named the Region Five Superintendent of the Year by the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium, a collaboration of public school districts and higher education institutions in central North Carolina. The honor recognizes Reeves as one of the top eight superintendents statewide and places him in the running for the A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year.

Reeves received his master’s degree from GWU in 2002 and his educational specialist and doctorate degrees from UNC Greensboro. Prior to serving as superintendent of Surry County Schools, he served as superintendent of Ashe County (N.C.) Schools. Since assuming his role in Surry County in 2013, Reeves has fostered a culture of high expectations for all students to grow academically, physically, socially, and emotionally. He raises the bar to challenge status quo to increase student achievement while always being fiscally responsible.

Reeves has led the charge to create innovative programs such as the Surry Virtual Academy, a powerful college-going culture in all of Surry County Schools, the Digital Media Academy, the first STEM magnet school in Surry County, and GROW Strong Running Clubs. He has not only led the charge to create these innovations, he has shared his vision at the state and the national levels and regularly hosts other school districts to share innovative practices.

Eight regional winners compete for the A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year award. Held in November, the presentation ceremony is sponsored by the N.C. Association of School Administrators and the N.C. School Boards Association. The winner of the state award competes for the title of National Superintendent of the Year and serves as an adviser to the State Board of Education.
