Two Ceremonies Planned to Celebrate Conferring of Hundreds of Degrees

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb University will award more than 530 degrees during the 2019 spring commencement exercises to be held on Saturday, May 11. Ceremonies are planned for 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Paul Porter Arena of the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center.

The ceremony at 10 a.m. will celebrate the achievements of more than 275 students in GWU’s traditional undergraduate and GOAL-DCP programs. A special presentation will be made during the program in memory of Jalin Terrill Lawson, who was a junior at GWU at the time of his tragic accident in 2017. He would have been walking with the class of 2019 to receive his diploma.

At 3 p.m., the ceremony will focus on the accomplishments of over 250 students who have successfully completed graduate and divinity programs. During the celebration, an honorary Doctor of Education degree will be awarded posthumously to Latoya Bridgers Gantt. The 38-year-old was nearing the completion of her doctoral coursework when she tragically passed away in the fall of 2018.

Various students will participate in the morning and afternoon ceremonies by offering the invocation and reading scripture. Selected graduates will be honored with academic achievement awards, and the Most Outstanding Male/Female Graduate awards will be presented.
