BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb University Theatre Department will present a Holocaust love story with the latest production planned on April 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. and April 26 at 2:30 p.m. “#8” takes the stage in the Millennium Playhouse, located in the Communication Studies building.

A Holocaust love story, “#8” was a 1990 finalist in the Eugene O’Neill National Playwright Competition. The play was further developed and later premiered at The Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre in 1994. The storyline follows the Stein family’s difficult choices as they plan an escape from their Nazi-occupied homeland.

“I want the audiences to enjoy a good story —one that interests, intrigues, inspires, and prompts further investigation,” Dr. William Martin, guest director, shared. “Even though the play takes place at the beginning of World War II in Poland, I believe the audiences will be able to identify and empathize with this small family who is facing an almost insurmountable challenge of escaping and surviving one of history’s most horrendous events.”

Martin’s first Broadway venture was the Tony-nominated Best Musical “The Lieutenant” for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Director 1974-1975. Since that time, he has directed more than 200 musical and non-musical theatre productions both on and off Broadway, as well as in the regional and university theatre arenas. Martin previously directed the GWU production “Is He Dead?” in 2012.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for senior adults and students of other schools, free for GWU students, faculty and staff and children under 12. GWU faculty and staff will receive up to four free tickets. For more information, contact Rachel Sams at 704-406-2066 or
