Event Helps Prepare First-Year and Transfer Students for Start of Classes in August

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The preparations have been made… the must-have items are checked off from lists… the months have turned to weeks and the weeks have turned to days.  The clock is winding down for many teens as they prepare to leave the comforts of home in order to begin their new season of life as full-time college students.

On May 30, before many have even graduated from high school, dozens of incoming students will take advantage of a GWU Jump Start day.  Held prior to fall orientation, Jump Start is designed to help students finalize the details of their class schedules, housing assignments, and even billing to ensure a smooth transition before officially moving onto campus in August.

Parent Beth Marvin said the Jump Start event was extremely beneficial to her and her daughter last year because they were able to get their questions answered and come away from the event with peace of mind as they planned for fall orientation.

“I think Jump Start really allows the students to have a more comfortable feeling and be more at ease and more at home because they will have been here and walked the campus, been in some of the buildings, met some of the students, met some of the faculty, so it really gives them a chance to just feel a part of Gardner-Webb before they actually come,” she said.

Incoming students will follow the schedule below:

8:30 – 9 a.m. Morning group check-in under tent in front of DCC; Refreshments in lower level.

9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Academic Testing

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Appointments with advising, financial aid, business office

10 a.m. Morning Campus tour

11:30-12 p.m. Afternoon group checks in under tent in front of DCC

12 p.m. Lunch in The Caf

1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Academic Testing

3 p.m. Afternoon Campus Tour

1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Appointments with advising, financial aid, business office

Representatives from a wide array of areas and clubs will be set up on the first floor of the Dover Campus Center to offer students a glimpse into some of the programs, activities, and clubs that are part of campus life.

Other Jump Start days are planned in June and July.  For more information, contact the GWU Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 704-406-4498.
