Jaylen Garvin has been awarded the R.W. Andrews Scholarship Fund established in 1998. The scholarship’s namesake, Ralph W. Andrews, was a Cleveland County, N.C., native who worked as a publisher in New York and San Francisco. Ali Paksoy, whose mother was a lifelong friend of Andrews, serves on the scholarship selection committee. “Mr. Andrews felt a need for creating leadership opportunities in the African-American community,” explained Paksoy, a district court judge in Cleveland County, N.C. “He wanted to create this fund to benefit young, African-American males in Cleveland County who may want to stay here.”

This year’s applicants were impressive, but Garvin stood out to Paksoy for several reasons. “He places a great value on education,” he observed. “I was impressed with his grades, class rank, communication and writing skills, and his desire to succeed.”

Garvin decided to attend Gardner-Webb after touring the campus. “My first impression was that GWU is a stunningly appealing college,” he reflected. “I was seriously left with zero words at how beautiful and oddly familiar the campus felt to me. I see this as an opportunity to achieve my career goals in a place not too far away from home.”

At Kings Mountain High School, Garvin has been active in the art club, drama club and debate club. He is also a member of the National Honors Society, Beta Club and National Arts Honors Society. “Winning this scholarship means I’ve taken the next steps towards my career and life,” Garvin assessed. “I am very happy in seeing what my college studies will hold and what skills I will obtain and sharpen. I am thankful to everyone and everything that has gotten me this far, and I hope Gardner-Webb welcomes me as much as I welcome it.”
