University to Host Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 20

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Gardner-Webb University takes pride in supporting local men and women who protect the country through military service.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Gardner-Webb will honor service personnel by offering active-duty military members and veterans free admission to the University’s football game at Spangler Stadium.  GWU will host Military Appreciation Day as the Runnin’ Bulldogs take on the Wofford Terriers at 6 p.m.

“This is one of our great Gardner-Webb traditions because it draws a variety of community members to the University,” said Katie Spiro, GWU Marketing and Promotions Assistant for Athletics. “This exposes students to the culture of service that we are unfamiliar with, but is important in our daily lives.”

Some of the local military organizations that will be in attendance at Saturday’s game include the American Legion, Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC), and local Cleveland County veterans.  All active-duty personnel, veterans, and ROTC groups will be admitted to the game free.  Additionally, all fans who donate three pairs of socks will also receive free admission to the game, part of a separate university initiative to support the homeless.

Prior to Saturday’s game, attractions will include a rock wall, a military recruiting tent, two military vehicles, and USA face paint.   Halftime activities will include the recognition of ROTC cadets.
