BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Dr. Danny West, professor of preaching and pastoral studies in the School of Divinity, will be speaking about Dr. Martin Luther at Gardner-Webb University’s Dimensions program on Tuesday, Oct. 31. This event will be held at 9:25 a.m. in Stewart Hall of Tucker Student Center on GWU’s main campus and is free and open to the public.

“I am honored to speak on the legacy of Dr. Luther,” shared Dr. West. “What so captures my imagination about the reformer is his sheer humanity. He is no ‘super hero’ of faith but rather a man who was plagued with doubts, fears, struggles, and uncertainties. In the midst of that uncertainty, it was God’s grace – Sola Gratia – that saved Luther. Luther, like all of us, had no claim to this grace, but it was given by God. I love his story.”

The program is scheduled on the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, a movement that was largely spearheaded by Luther. On Oct. 31, 1517, Luther nailed a sheet of paper with his 95 Theses on the University of Wittenberg’s chapel door. His central idea was that salvation can be reached by faith and divine grace. “I hope that our students would appreciate the magnitude of Luther’s courage,” West observed. “He stood up to the prevailing powers of his day based upon his unshakeable conviction to honor and live by the word of God.”
