Apples and Accolades Awards Program Recognizes Employee Excellence

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb University recognized faculty and staff Friday for outstanding service and teaching contributions, tenures of service, and retirement honors during the annual “Apples and Accolades” ceremony.

The Gardner-Webb Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient for 2014 was Dr. Paul Etter, professor of music in the School of Performing & Visual Arts.

“To the students and community members with whom he works, he is both a gracious guide and a gifted instructor,” said GWU President Dr. Frank Bonner.  “He provides a concise but informative introduction to the music he chooses for performance and generally succeeds in educating hearts as well as heads.  His proven talent, dedication, and vision in a variety of settings further validate this recognition.”

Staff Member of the Year Awards were presented to Gardner-Webb employees who go beyond the call of duty for the University and its students, and they are nominated by their colleagues.

Jeff Powell, Operations Manager and Program Director for WGWG and adjunct professor for the University, was honored as Outstanding Male Staff Member of the Year.  “Recently, when changes to the station’s delivery format were announced, he had already researched dozens of Internet-only station models,” Bonner said.  “His desire was to propel WGWG into the technologies of the future.  He consistently reflects his passion for the field that has become his life’s work and is thrilled when he notes people tuning in to WGWG programming from around the world.”

Bailey Davis, Director of L.E.A.P. (Learning Enrichment and Assistance Program) was honored as Outstanding Female Staff Member of the Year.  “Her role at Gardner-Webb provides some of the most vital resources to students, and she epitomizes the characteristics of grace, integrity and professionalism,” Bonner said.  “She is always willing to go above and beyond for those who need her assistance.” Davis is a two-time GWU alum, and she has impacted the university family as both a student and an employee.

Community engagement awards were presented to faculty member Dr. Denise Smith, Assistant Professor of Business, and staff member Ashley Koch, Secretary to Math and Natural Sciences Department. Koch was honored for her work with a community student math camp.
