Gary Weller Will Share About the Accident that Changed His Life

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gary Weller, former head football coach at Pine Forest High School in Fayetteville, N.C., will speak at Gardner-Webb University’s Dimensions program beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 22. The program will be held in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center and is free and open to the public.

Coach Weller will share his incredible story about how his life was changed on April 14, 2004, the day he became the victim of a deranged man who ran over him with a utility van. Weller was dragged over 100 feet beneath the van and was in a coma for 35 days. He admitted later that when he finally woke up and became aware of his condition he was angry because “this wasn’t my vision for my life.” Weller was faced with the tough decision of forgiving, and during the trial of his attacker, Weller verbally offered forgiveness.

Now, over 10 years after the accident, Weller is bound to a wheelchair and is only able to stand with the support of a walker, but he has not let this make him a bitter man. “I was not going to give him permission to ruin the rest of my life,” Weller commented. “I was not going to be bitter. I was going to get better. I was going to exhibit and show people by example that I could still be productive.”

Weller freely shares his story, speaking empowering words to groups across North Carolina. His tale has even caught the eye of author Matt Ham, who has included Weller’s story in his book, Redefine Rich: A New Perspective on the Good Life.

Weller is looking forward to speaking at the Dimensions program. “I want to share that with God’s help you can accomplish anything,” he offered. “I hope the students will take away that it is all about attitude. Attitudes can be worked on. If you have a bad attitude it is like a flat tire. If you don’t fix it, you aren’t going anywhere.”
