University Announces 2016 Recipients of Educational Fund Assistance

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—For almost 25 years, the Joseph B. Freeman Jr. Educational Fund has provided scholarships to help Cleveland County high school students pursue a college education. The 2016 Freeman Scholars were announced May 23, and all five students will attend Gardner-Webb University.

A total of $15,000 in scholarships was awarded during a presentation in the Tucker Student Center on Gardner-Webb’s main campus. Each year since the educational fund was established in 1991, at least one Freeman Scholar has enrolled at Gardner-Webb.

Local business leaders helped launch the scholarship after recognizing a need to assist Cleveland County students who excel in academics and in activities beyond the classroom. Founders named the scholarship for the late Joseph B. Freeman, who was head of the Interstate Johnson Lane financial services office in Shelby. Throughout his life, Freeman was a significant supporter of education in the county.

“Mr. Freeman was an outstanding business and community leader,” shared Scoot Dixon, a longtime Gardner-Webb and community leader who has worked alongside the scholarship’s committee. “While he would never have sought the attention, he would be very pleased to know that this scholarship was assisting deserving young residents of Cleveland County with their college expenses.”

The Freeman Scholarship committee seeks students who qualify academically for college but whose unique situations might otherwise prevent them from attending. Candidates are evaluated on academic achievements, extracurricular activities, personal influences and motivation despite financial need.
