World-Class Student Musicians to Spend a Month at GWU

Carolina Crown performs their world-championship winning routine at the DCI Championships in 2013BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb University welcomes more than 150 student musicians and the sounds of a world-class drum and bugle corps as Carolina Crown returns to campus for its annual spring training.

Carolina Crown, a contender each year for the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championship, has partnered with Gardner-Webb since 2007 for practice and rehearsal space prior to its national tours.

Based in Fort Mill, S.C., Carolina Crown finished third in the 2017 DCI competition with their show “It Is…” and earned a world championship in 2013 with “E=MC^2.” This year’s group will practice now through June 16 at Gardner-Webb University facilities. Their latest show is titled, “Beast.”

“What those kids experience in music education is one of the best programs out there,” explained Mark Cole, GWU assistant professor of music education and marching band director. “They are a model for our students to watch. I tell people if they’re visiting here in the summer to watch Carolina Crown rehearse.”

Nancy Coates serves as the director of Operations/Tour Manager for Carolina Crown and said the group is thrilled to be back on campus.

“Our members love spending spring training at Gardner Webb,” she shared. “After coming here for many years we’ve developed great friendships and working relationships with the staff and community here. Our members work extremely hard for many hours a day, so having people around us who go the extra mile to spoil us in the dining hall or help find space for us when it rains is so appreciated. It is part of what sets us up for success during spring training. We hope to be able to continue this relationship for years to come.”

The community will be invited to a dress-rehearsal performance on Saturday, June 16. The time is to be determined. For more information about Carolina Crown, visit or “like” Carolina Crown on Facebook.
