Cherryville Native Guy Eaker Sr. to Share “Stories and Fish Tales”

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Mark Twain once said, “Don’t tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.” Whether this timeless advice is followed remains to be seen in October as the Gardner-Webb University Fishing Club presents “Stories and Fish Tales,” featuring bass fishing legend Guy Eaker Sr.

The Club will welcome Eaker on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. for the third Pro-Angler Seminar, to be held in Stewart Hall, located in the new Tucker Student Center.  “Our goal is to promote Gardner-Webb University, the sport of fishing and provide an educational opportunity for anglers in the community,” said Jeremy Fern, club adviser.  “In addition to sharing more about his experiences, Eaker will offer tips and tricks for everyone from the novice to the expert angler.”

“Stories and Fish Tales” is being presented by Abu Garcia and Berkley.  Both are brands of Pure Fishing, Inc., a corporate sponsor of Eaker.  Organizers say he will share wild stories and fish tales from his career, ranging from fishing in Cuba to sharing a day on the lake with past U.S. presidents.  A Bass Fishing Hall of Fame inductee and active angler, Eaker has cumulated nearly $700,000 in winnings over his fishing career and competed in nearly 300 professional fishing tournaments.

Attendees will enjoy opportunities to win raffle prizes, such as fishing equipment, guided fishing trips, and other free items.  Raffle tickets will be available for purchase and dinner will be provided courtesy of Bojangles.  In addition to Pure Fishing, Inc., other sponsors include One Stop Food Stores, New Wilderness Adventures, East Coast Athletics and Minn Kota.

Although admission is free, this special event will also serve as a fundraising effort of the club as they work to purchase their first bass boat.  Donations are appreciated, but not required.  For more information, contact Jeremy Fern at 704-406-3988, or email

The Gardner-Webb University Fishing Club is open to all full-time undergraduate students at Gardner-Webb University that love to fish and love the outdoors.  Members compete in a variety of tournaments throughout the Southeast. Additional information is available at
