Tips for Parents

  • If you are on social media, connect with GWU.  Great way to keep informed about what is happening on campus.
  • Join your student and enjoy the festivities of Family Weekend and Homecoming
    • Family Weekend – September 15-16
    • Homecoming – October 7
  • Send mail to your student – actual mail instead of emails, texts, etc.  They love getting mail in their mailboxes.
  • Include gift cards for local restaurants in cards and letters.
  • Send “care packages” from home.
  • Check in with your student and communicate regularly.  Keep in mind they are busy with classes and activities.  Do not expect constant communication…find a healthy balance.
  • Encourage your student to get involved in their new community.  They can look for ways to volunteer and/or join clubs and organizations on campus.
  • Treat your student as an adult.  Guide them – do not rescue them and try to do everything for them.
  • If you sense your student is struggling, encourage them to reach out to the resources GWU provides. (LEAP, Writing Center, Counseling Center, etc.).
  • Your ability to listen and guide them will make the challenges more manageable.
  • Download the Gardner-Webb Student Life app to see what events are offered for your student each week. The Gardner-Webb Student Life app may be found in the Apple Store and the Google Play store.
  • Opt In to  Send Word Now, the University’s emergency notification system. Your student can access Send Word Now through WebbConnect to add your phone number.
  • Visit campus and enjoy a sporting event, play, or concert with your student.
  • Be aware that the course load in college is much different.  Classes will be more demanding at GWU and students’ grades may vary from what they are used to.  Remind your student of the resources available.
  • All student records are confidential and protected by The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. To gain access to your students records, your student must sign a release (Found in WebbConnect) to give you access to their records.
