Statement: Sunday, 9/10/2017, 9:30 AM

While the University continues to monitor the weather situation with Hurricane Irma, we anticipate a regular schedule on Monday, September 11th.

We urge students, faculty and staff traveling to campus to use your best judgment and be cautious. At Gardner-Webb we continue to remember in our prayers everyone facing this extraordinary storm.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the thousands of individuals already impacted by recent weather-related events, and Gardner-Webb campus ministries is reaching out to GWU family who are and have been in harm’s way.

While the course of Hurricane Irma is not fixed, we know there is a possibility that Gardner-Webb could be in the storm’s path. While we prepare for many scenarios, the most likely risk could be extended loss of power and downed trees.

What we are doing?

• We are working closely with local emergency management officials to monitor the latest weather information and will heed all public safety directives.
• We are preparing our supplies and communications systems to respond should we be in the path of the storm.
• We are increasing non-perishable food supplies for our students through our dining and food services.
• We are developing staffing plans to provide for safety in the event of loss of power.
• We are carefully weighing the options to proactively cancel classes based on the forecasts. An update on this decision is planned for Friday afternoon.
• We will post information here, but the primary means of emergency communication will be our mass notification system: https://www.gwunotify.sendwordnow.com

What you can do?

• IN THE EVENT OF A POWER OUTAGE – DO NOT USE CANDLES, GRILLS OR HAVE ANY COMBUSTIBLE DEVICES INDOORS AT ANY TIME.
• IF YOU REMAIN ON CAMPUS, PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR RESIDENCE HALL STAFF ARE AWARE OF YOUR DECISION TO REMAIN ON CAMPUS AND INFORM THEM SHOULD YOU DECIDE TO LEAVE.
• Make certain that you have registered and updated your emergency contact information at https://www.gwunotify.sendwordnow.com.
• Consider adding parents, spouse or other important contact information to your sendwordnow account.
• Consider purchasing a flashlight and spare batteries; LED lights last longer.
• Consider back up power options for cell phones.
• Consider stocking up on bottled water / non- perishable food.
