Gardner-Webb’s Support of United Way Campaign Raises Thousands for Neighbors in Need

She never considered she would become a victim of domestic violence. But 15 years ago, her story made local headlines as the man she loved—the father of her daughter—shot her in their home, left her for dead, and then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. Things have never been the same for Stacy.

Although she survived that attack, she can no longer walk. Stacy is bound to a wheelchair, and living independently is a daily challenge. Thanks to the United Way, she and her children were able to establish a new legacy in a loving home through the help of the Cleveland County Community Development Corporation (CDC), a local United Way agency.

**** Over the past four years, GWU has raised nearly $150,000 for local United Way agencies. In fact, the combined giving from Gardner-Webb and Cleveland Community College earned our community a top-10 spot on the 2016 National Leaderboard for Colleges & Universities. Our community was one of only two in the Carolinas in the top 10, and local officials say it was the GWU campaign that took us to the No. 5 spot.

The United Way works hard to promote healthy minds, healthy finances, healthy lives and healthy communities. Last year alone, over 47,000 people were provided services through one of the 27 United Way of Cleveland County Partner Agencies.

This week, Gardner-Webb employees celebrate the culmination of another successful United Way campaign, and they have taken Henri Nouwen’s words to heart:

“Even a seemingly small act of generosity can grow into something far beyond what we could ever ask or imagine.”
