GWU Teams Receive Academic Accolades

Several Gardner-Webb University athletic teams were recently honored for overall academic excellence.

The GWU volleyball program was honored for the fifth straight year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), earning the 2016-17 Team Academic Award. The award is given to programs across all levels of college and high school competition that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. More than 140 NCAA Division I programs were honored, with a record 822 total teams earning AVCA Team Academic Award honors.

The Gardner-Webb women's track and field team was recognized for its achievements in the classroom during the 2016-17 season, earning its fifth consecutive United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team award.

This marks the ninth time in the last ten years that Gardner-Webb's women's team has been honored by the USTFCCAA.  A total of 218 women's teams earned All-Academic honors as a result of compiling a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher.  Gardner-Webb posted a team GPA of 3.43 and was one of four Big South Conference programs to be recognized.

Gardner-Webb's swim programs were recognized for their academic prowess recently by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), with men's swimmers Connor Bos and Jordan Mintz receiving individual accolades.

Both teams were among 720 programs recognized by the CSCAA as Scholar All-America teams in 2016-2017—a new record for the 95-year old organization.

The Gardner-Webb women's swim team posted an impressive 3.61 team GPA to rank in the top-20 nationally at the Division I level. The GWU men also earned a spot on the list with a 3.07 team GPA.

The appearances are not unusual for each team, as the Gardner-Webb women have posted at least a 3.0 team GPA each year since its inception in 1999. The GWU men's team has done the same each season since beginning competition in 2007.

The Big South Conference announced its 2016-17 Presidential Honor Roll, with Gardner-Webb baseball having the most honorees in its sport with 24.

The Runnin' Bulldogs also had one of the three baseball student-athletes across the Big South to post a perfect grade-point average for the 2016-17 academic year.

To earn Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll honors, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA throughout the academic year. Across the league, 178 baseball student-athletes made the honor roll.
