Spring Break -More Than a Vacation Destination

70 GWU Students Spreading God’s Love
Boiling Springs, NC- While most college students head to tropical destinations to relax over Spring Break, 70 of Gardner-Webb University’s students and eight faculty and staff members volunteered their time to serve others around the world during this time.

They went to five different communities and provided both tangible help to fulfill physical needs and shared the love of Jesus Christ with those they come in contact with.  The various trips included:

New Orleans:
•    16 students and 3 Staff members
•    Participants aided in the work for disaster relief from Hurricane Katrina through painting homes, sheet rocking and mudding walls and distributing sandwiches to the homeless and those displaced by the floods.

Madison, Wisconsin:
•    7 students and 1 staff member
•    Participants helped in a variety of community ministries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison such as leading worship services, hosting a block party, and encouraging the growth of the Campus Ministries program on the campus.

Chimaltenango, Guatemala:
•    26 students and 1 staff member
•    Participants assisted in the everyday operations of the Agua Viva Children’s Home by doing tasks such as providing meals, painting the facility where the children live, helping with homework, planning activities for the children and leading worship services each night.

El Salvador:
•    10 students and 2 faculty/staff Members
•    Participants ministered to the deaf students at the School for Children with Special Needs in La Union, El Salvador, and also helped to improve ability of the teacher to communicate with the deaf students.  The mission team also had the opportunity to share with the deaf community in surrounding areas through dramas.
 
Cherepovets, Russia:
•    11 students and 1 faculty member
•    Participants worked in New Corners and with the Light of Hope Children’s Center, a day shelter for children whose parents do not or cannot care for their children during the day. The mission team spent their time showing God’s love to the kids through games, crafts and skits.

Campus Ministries sponsors mission trip’s each Fall, Spring and Summer and has done so for many years. These trips allow GWU students to have the opportunity to live out the motto of Gardner-Webb, “For God and For Humanity.”
