And to Dr. Frank Campbell Who Was Named Danville, VA. Citizen of the Year
(Courtesy of the Register & Bee / Written by Matt Charles / Published: December 4th) Keeping a secret isn't easy, especially when many of the Citizen of the Year Award committee members see the recipient daily. Nevertheless, Frank R. Campbell said he had no inkling he was being honored at the 77th Annual Citizenship Award dinner held Thursday night at the Danville Golf Club.

Jay Hayes told me that Kiwanis was starting a new tradition of having a guest speaker give the introductory prayer and asked me to lead it, Campbell said. I know now that I can't trust my friends, as they will hide things from you.

FACULTY & STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Dr. June Hobbs (English) Featured In NY Times Article By Thomas Lynch

You might remember that national figure Thomas Lynch (essayist, poet, and funeral director) visited the GWU campus during an event that was presented by The Center for Continuing Professional Education back in October. Lynch was a part of discussions that dealt with death, grief, and life issues.

Lynch has received critical acclaim and awards for his books and is regularly featured in the New York Times, The Boston Globe and even The Times of London, England.

It just so happens that an experience during his (Lynch) visit to our area led Lynch to include our own June Hobbs and a local cemetery in his New York Times article from November 1st.

His story included the following...
"In her honors seminar, "Death in American Culture," at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., June Hobbs takes her students on a field trip to Sunset Cemetery in nearby Shelby. She believes that cemeteries have much to tell us about ourselves.

"I find this astonishing," says Professor Hobbs. "This county had more casualties during the Civil War than any other."

Perhaps Professor Hobbs is right. The dead have something to teach us still. A visit to your local cemetery is a course of humanity. There are inklings to answers among the stones."
