Alumni Spotlight Dr. Sophia Gomes Steibel Professor of Christian Education, Gardner-Webb University
Sophia was born and raised in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; she is one of six children of all whom have surrendered to the call of ministry in some capacity. She is named for missionary Sohpia Nicols. late evangelist and founder of the international radio ministry, the “Bible School of the Air.” Executive home mission board of brazil, planted church downtown, epitome of emergent church.
Natural, dad emphasized daily devotion in family, She accepted Christ at age 7 sermon her dad was preaching in mountains of Brazil went forward during invitation. But members of First Baptist Brazil and had bible drill Wednesday night asked her questions and church members voted a approved her baptism. On way home had ice cream to celebrate. Call to ministry: 1st grade said wanted to be a teacher and missionary. Attended GA and acteen camps full-time ministry home environment cultivated relationship with God, to the church. and Doreen Steward first taught English at 12 but never really got the hang of it until GWU. Inspired and equipped by Dr. LeRoy Ford, Dr. Canoy, husband, family. Met Eduardo in Porte Legape in South Brazil, he was president of the Youth. Corresponded thereafter. Came to study in Rio at theological Seminary.
"He was the most hansome man I had ever seen." Dated, corresponded when she came to GWU and then came to NC. Married in Morehead City. And then left to get Masters and doctorate. When she is not serving her students, Sophia enjoys working out, gardening, and painting. She is fond of listening to classical music and playing hymns on the piano. She loves reading-today, she has a special interest in the sermons of John Claypool. |
Sophia’s love affair with Gardner-Webb began in 1973 when the Baptist Men of North Carolina began sponsoring her undergraduate studies. These men had made a connection with her during a mission trip to her hometown. She graduated in 1977 with a bachelor of arts degree in religious education and continued her studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where she earned her Master of Arts and Ph.D. After serving as professor at the Religious Education Institute and South Brazil Baptist Theological Seminary in addition to President of Campinas Baptist Theological Seminary, she returned to GWU in 1993 to serve as professor in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy. In 2001, she joined the School of Divinity faculty as professor of Christian Education. Sophia has been named Who’s Who as both a student and professor and in 2006 received the honorary Fleming-White Award, no known as Gardner-Webb University’s Outstanding Professor Award.
