Political Science Professors Help Emma Rose (’17) Prepare for Future

When Emma Rose (’17) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was contacted by the Women’s Lacrosse coach at Gardner-Webb University, she couldn’t believe the timing.

“I ended up visiting the school shortly after my grandfather died, and it just seemed like a sign that I found Gardner-Webb,” Rose observed. “I fell in love with the school once I stepped foot on the campus. The community is small and tight knit. You know your professors and everyone in your major. It creates an awesome learning environment. I’ve met the happiest and nicest people at Gardner-Webb, and I think everyone deserves to experience that.”

She decided on her major after taking classes in political science. “Professor Donna Schronce and Dr. Michael Kuchinsky (retired) taught some of my favorite classes, ‘Sustainable Geography’ and ‘International Political Economy,’” she shared. “They provided me with advice on countless occasions and gave me the guidance I needed to succeed in the classroom and in life. In speech class with Dr. Joseph Webb, I learned how to relax so that I could effectively convey my thoughts and get my point across to groups of people.”

She feels her studies have provided her with practical knowledge for her chosen field and the personal skills to successfully manage people. Her goal after college is to attend graduate school and serve as a graduate assistant for a women’s lacrosse team.

A summer internship in Africa through the Lacrosse Volunteer Corps gave her an opportunity to learn more life skills while helping others. She lived in a small village and taught physical education and lacrosse techniques to school children. “Overall my internship taught me patience that will help me in all aspects of life,” she assessed. “I experienced the cultural traditions of Uganda and helped empower young students at the primary school. I am grateful for all the people I met, and the ones who gave me this opportunity.”
