Ruby C. Hunt Remembered for Contributions to Hunt School of Nursing

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The Gardner-Webb University community is mourning the loss of one of its longtime supporters. Ruby Crowder Hunt, wife of GWU Trustee Dr. Jack Hunt, passed away May 27 at her home in Lattimore, N.C.

In 2014, the Hunts gave a generous gift to establish the Hunt School of Nursing. A portion of the gift provided program enhancements, renovated nursing facilities, and supplied educational technology.  In addition, the donation created the Hunt Sisters Nursing Scholars Fund to offer scholarship opportunities for students in the Hunt School of Nursing. “We’ve always had a passion for helping nurses and have a deep, deep appreciation for their call and their purpose,” Jack Hunt shared at the time.

Woody Fish, GWU Vice President for External Affairs and Advancement praised the couple for their service not only to GWU but also to the community and the state. “The Hunt School of Nursing at Gardner-Webb University and the Ruby Hunt YMCA are great examples of their love for young people,” Fish observed.

Ruby Hunt was known in the Lattimore community for her cooking and volunteer work. She and Jack were married 71 years and have five daughters, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. When her husband served as a representative in the North Carolina General Assembly, Ruby accompanied him on trips to Raleigh and made a home away from home for them there. She served as Chaplain of the Sir Walter Cabinet where she researched and presented inspiring devotionals on living a meaningful life.

“Ruby Hunt fully embodied the caring and compassion for people that inspired her, along with husband Jack, to support nursing and many other worthy causes and to make so many people’s lives better,” shared GWU President Dr. Frank Bonner.

A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Shelby, N.C.  Receiving of friends after the service in Dover Activities Center. Memorials may be made to GWU Hunt School of Nursing Scholarship, P.O. Box 997, Boiling Springs, NC 28017 or Ruby C. Hunt YMCA, P. O. Box 2272, Shelby, NC  28151 or to the charity of donor’s choice.
