Employees Recognized at Annual “Apples and Accolades” Award Program

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— Gardner-Webb University recognized outstanding faculty and staff members recently during the annual “Apples and Accolades” ceremony held in Tucker Student Center on the GWU main campus.

Robert N. Moore

The 2017 Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Robert N. Moore, Instructor in American Sign Language. Moore engages students in his class by utilizing hands-on techniques and animated communication skills. He often interrupts difficult lessons to share a funny story to illustrate his point. “Clearly, to the students and community members with whom he works, he is both a gracious guide and a gifted instructor,” GWU President Dr. Frank Bonner said as he presented the award. “He provides concise and comprehensive training and generally succeeds in educating hearts as well as heads. His proven talent, dedication, and vision in a variety of settings further validate this recognition.”

Heather Bridges Moore

Staff Member of the Year Awards were presented to Gardner-Webb employees who go beyond the call of duty for the University and its students, and they are nominated by their colleagues. The Female Staff Member of the Year was presented to Heather Bridges Moore, director of Creative Services. Moore works many long hours to provide exceptional service to University departments. “She is wholeheartedly committed to providing a product of the highest caliber to each of the University clients she serves—often working against the clock with her team to achieve the seemingly impossible,” Bonner described.

Larry Thomas

University Police Captain Larry Thomas, was recognized as the Male Staff Member of the Year. Thomas has served Gardner-Webb for more than 38 years. “A graduate of Gardner-Webb, he never fails to convey a ‘people first’ heart of service to others,” Bonner said. “He makes a difference each day in the lives of those he encounters—and has done so consistently for nearly four decades.”

Noel T. Manning II

President’s Awards for Community Engagement recognize a staff and a faculty member who exemplify the meaning of the GWU motto, “Pro Deo et Humanitate,” through their commitment to community service. The staff award was presented to Associate Vice President for Communications and Marketing Noel T. Manning II. Manning serves as a board member and volunteer for several community groups, including The Salvation Army, The Broad River Greenway in Boiling Springs and The Cleveland County (N.C.) Arts Council.

Dr. Quanza Mooring

The faculty award was given to Hunt School of Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Quanza Mooring. Mooring organized a supply drive for her hometown, which was devastated by a hurricane in fall 2016. She also works with a local organization to help children in poverty and is academic sponsor for the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).

Gardner-Webb employees were also recognized for their tenures of service to the University, and retiring employees were honored with special presentations.
