The Biology Project The
Biology Project is an interactive online resource for learning biology
developed at The University of Arizona. The Project covers the basic
concepts of biology and is organized by topic (ex. "Cell Biology"). Problem
sets are included.
Internet Directory for Botany IDB
is a comprehensive index site that covers all kinds of botanical information.
It can be searched by either an alphabetical or subject list. Each list
has its own search engine, and you can select a site (i.e., a country)
to search. Botany.net also has a link to the Ecology
WWW page.
Virtual
Frog Dissection Kit Dissect Fluffy the frog without getting your
hands dirty or hurting anything. This page allows you to rotate the frog
to look at different angles, enlarge or shrink it, and remove the organs
one-by-one or in groups. No commentary is included.
Chemistry
Chemistry.org A
service of the American Chemical Society, Chemcenter provides resources
such as professional services, information on conferences, publications,
online chemistry news, and links to chemistry-related sites. A link to
the ACS website is included.
WebElements Periodic Table A
virtual periodic table. Each symbol on the table is a link to a description
of that element. Descriptions include: atomic weight, physical properties,
and crystal structure. There is also an index that lets you look up an
element by name.
Geology
ATHENA Mineralogy ATHENA
gives information on thousands of minerals: formula, crystal system,
Strunz number, references, and locality. The minerals are organized by
databases: alphabetical list, systematic list, elements, sulfides, halides,
etc.
Environmental
Sites on the Internet This comprehensive directory organizes links
to environmental sites by a subject index. There are also links to directories,
guides, search engines, journals, and newsletters.
Geoscience Links As part
of AGIWEB (American Geological Institute), this is a collection of links
to federal agencies, geoscience web servers, organizations (including
AGI member societies), and state geological societies.
Global Change Master Directory A
comprehensive directory of information about Earth science data, including
broad coverage of the oceans, atmosphere, hydrosphere, solid earth, biosphere,
and human dimensions of global change.
US Geological Survey The USGS homepage
has resources on biology, geology, mapping, and water. These resources
include press releases, links, and databases. Educational resources are
included, along with Factsheets on environmental hazards and natural
resources.
Physics and Astronomy
The Astronomy Cafe "The
web site for the astronomically disadvantaged." This site is designed
for people who are curious about astronomy but have little knowledge
about the subject. One feature is "Ask the Astronomer," an archive of
questions and answers compiled by a professional astronomer (the NASA
scientist who maintains this site).
Astronomy Picture
of the Day Everyday, NASA features a new picture of a stellar object
taken by one of its spacecraft. The pictures are often stunning and are
always interesting. An archive of every image going back to 1995 is available.
An explanation is included.
CERN (European Organization
for Nuclear Research) Birthplace of the World Wide Web, CERN is the
world's largest particle physics center. The CERN website has all the
information that one would expect--scientific programs, events, organizations,
etc. Of particular interest under "Publications" are the preprints--text
of journal articles that represent the cutting edge of physics research,
available through the CERN server before (and after!) they appear in
print.
Comets and Meteor Showers An
amateur astronomer put together this website to assist other observers
by providing accurate positions and information on various comets and
meteor showers, along with photographs. Also included are a glossary
and links to other sites.
Institute of Physics The IOP is a professional
body for physicists. Its website has the Institute's activities, membership,
and free online services, such as job openings. One activity of the IOP
is publishing; the site provides information about its journals (including
electronic), magazines, books, and reference. Registration is necessary
to access online articles.
NASA The NASA website is a gateway to a vast
amount of information about America's space program. Here you will find a webpage
for each current NASA mission, manned or unmanned. Each mission page includes
links to images, news, spacecraft info, and mission profile. About NASA itself,
there is information about the agency's organization, administration, and facilities.
The NASA History Office's webpage has details about past missions, including
(some) astronaut biographies, and the events of each flight.
NASA Astrophysics Data System ADS is
a NASA-funded project whose main resource is an abstract service, which includes
four sets of abstracts: astronomy/astrophysics, instrumentation, physics/geophysics,
and the Los Alamos preprint server. Also included is an article service, a digital
library, astronomical data catalogs, and archives.
The Nine
Planets This multimedia tour of the Solar System not only features the planets
but also the major moons, comets, and asteriods. Each entry includes the object's
image, history, mythology, and description. This site is designed for lay persons
interested in astronomy; a glossary of scientific terms is included, along with
appendices and links to other sites.
PhysLink An excellent site that has an
extensive list of quality physics links: physics jobs, science software, science
reference, physics departments, news, hightech companies, and science journals.
Quotations from famous scientists (and others) on every page.
Views of the Solar System Scientific
information on each planet, along with computer animations of each world, are
available at this site. The history of space exploration is also available; a
chronology of every space mission to each planet is included. |
