Reference Resources

If you want a quick piece of information, such as looking up the definition of a word in an online dictionary, then try these "ready reference" websites. In addition to dictionaries, there are thesauri, almanacs, directories, and style guides. There are also resources such as The Statistical Abstract of the United States.

Almanacs

Ecclesiastical Calendar Type in any year after 325 A.D., and this website will give you the dates of Easter, Lent, and movable Feasts for that year, in addition to a selection of holidays with fixed dates. Dates are available for both the Western and Orthodox churches.

InfoPlease.com This resource is an almanac, dictionary, biography, and encyclopedia all rolled into one. Information can be located by a search engine (which can search all of the above resources), or by the almanac's index (world, sports, business, etc.).

Old Farmer's Almanac Published since 1792, the online version of the Old Farmer's Almanac has weather forecasts, both 5-day and long-range; tidal and astronomical information; cooking and gardening tips; and, of course, the weekly wisdom and seasonal offerings that the Almanac is famous for. A site index and navigation menu are available.

Today's Calendar and Clock Page If you want to know what the date is according to the many different calendars of the world--Jewish, Moslem, Chinese, Bahai, Buddhist, or even Roman--this web page has links to many different calendar and clock websites.

Biography

Distinguished Women of Past and Present This site has biographies of women, both famous and not famous, that have contributed to world culture. Entries can be searched by activity or by name. The Black History Month page focuses on African and African-American women.

Biography.com The  A&E Biography site has over 20,000 short, concise biographies.

Biographical Dictionary This dictionary has over 28,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day. The dictionary can be searched by names, birth years, death years, positions held, professions, literary and artistic works, miscellaneous achievements, and other keywords.

Presidents of the United States This Internet Public Library site has an entry on each president that includes his birth and death dates, religion, education, occupations, political party, election results, cabinet, and notable events of his term.

Dictionaries and Thesauri

Hypertext Webster Gateway This hypertext dictionary provides hypertext links for every word in each definition.

Merriam-Webster Online The Merriam-Webster Language Center has both a dictionary and a thesaurus, as well as features such as the Word of the Day and other word games.

Thesaurus.com The online version of the famous thesaurus has an index of terms, an index of the six main classes of words, and links to online resources.

YourDictionary.com This site is linked to more than 800 dictionaries and thesauri in 160 different languages, including artificial ones. The default English dictionary is Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, tenth edition.

Directories

Anywho/AT&T Toll Free (800) Internet Directory This directory includes an index of toll-free categories.

Bigfoot is a phone and email directory; the phone directory allows you to search both white and yellow pages.

SuperPages.com Search over 11 million U.S. business listings by category, business name, city, or state. There are also people and email directories.

Mapquest If you need directions from one point to another, Mapquest can provide maps and directions. You can get maps for locations all over the world.

International Telephone Directories on the Web has links to many phone directories, organized by regions (The Americas; Europe and Africa; Asia, Middle East, Pacific) and then by country. There are also links to multiple-country directories and email address directories.

The Switchboard lets you find a person, a business, or an email address; search the Web; and get maps & directions.

ThomasNet ThomasNet is a directory of industrial manufacturers of supplies and equipment. Over 150,000 companies are included. Note: member registration is necessary to use the Thomas Register, but registration is free.

US Postal Service ZIP Code Lookup and Address Information By entering an address, you can get its zip code; you can also find out the zip code for any city and vice versa.

Acronym Server Look up the meaning of an acronym.

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations The ninth edition of Bartlett's is available online, with authors organized both chronologically and alphabetically.

Census 2000 Gateway provides census information for every state in the Union. Housing, income, labor, and social (demographic) information is provided for each county or city. Clickable maps make this site easy to use.

How Stuff Works Have you ever wondered how your car engine works? Or a telephone? If you have, the answers are here. This site explains how so many of the things we take for granted work, from VCRs to the Internet. Cool virtual diagrams illustrate the explanations.

Ingenta Ingenta is a document delivery service that provides keyword access to article titles and summaries for almost 12 million articles from over 26,000 journals. Searching is free. NOTE: There is a charge for article delivery, for which the user is responsible.

PubList.com is a comprehensive directory of information about more than 150,000 periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers). Information for each periodical includes ISSN number, publisher, frequency, language, a brief description, special features, and circulation.

Statistical Abstract of the United States features USA Statistics in Brief, which provides data on the whole country in areas such as population, education, etc. There are also state rankings, which include data such as population projections and infant mortality rates.

Style Guides

A Guide for Writing Research Papers based on MLA Documentation This MLA Documentation Guide offers general information on the formatting of citations based on MLA guidelines.

A Guide for Writing Research Papers based on Styles Recommended by the American Psychological Association While this guide is not a substitute for the print version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, it does have answers to questions about manuscript preparation, references, and parenthetical citations for APA style.

Turabian Style Guide The Cook Library at the University of Southern Mississippi provides this "tip sheet" with examples of common forms of citations based on Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations.

The CSE Scientific Style and Format Guide This site has information on both systems of documentation associated with the CSE Style--the citation-sequence system and the name-year system--as referenced in the Council of Biology Editors' manual Scientific Style and Format.

APAStyle.org This page on the APA official website offers guidelines and examples on citing information from the Internet and the World Wide Web.

MLA Style Electronic Formats This site offers sample formats and examples of electronic source citation based on the MLA format.

Student Supplement for The SBL Handbook of Style “The Student Supplement to the SBL Handbook of Style” will address problems students typically encounter when working with the Handbook, biblical texts, and secondary literature. Such issues include questions related to term papers (margins, subheadings, etc.), expanded illustrations of commentaries, and other literature unfamiliar to many students. Sample pages of term papers are included.

Research and Documentation Online This site provides information on finding both library and online sources of information for subjects dealing with the humanities, social sciences, and general sciences and offers guidelines for citing these sources in the MLA, APA, CSE, and Chicago/Turabian styles.

Online! A Reference Guide to Using Internet Sources This companion website to the book Online! A Reference Guide to Using Internet Sources, 2003 Edition, contains detailed advice on citing and documenting online sources using the MLA, APA, Chicago, and CSE Styles.

Uncle Sam--Brief Guide to Citing Government Publications This site, developed at the University of Memphis, provides examples of government document citations based on the Chicago/Turabian Style.
