Departments and Resources Reference Department Instructional ServicesReference Librarians are available for individual, one-on-one instruction in the use of print and electronic resources. Reference Librarians are also available to do classroom presentations on using the library's resources.Interlibrary Loan ServiceInterlibrary Loan service is available to all currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. Patrons can request books and other materials not owned by Dover Library, and can obtain photocopies of articles from periodicals not available in the library's collection or available in full text electronically. Interlibrary Loan request forms are available online on the ILL information page. Patrons will be notified by phone or email when their requests come in. Before requesting an item on Interlibrary Loan, it is important to ascertain that it is not owned by Dover Library. This can be done by doing a title search in MAX, the library's online catalog. For articles, a patron can consult either MAX or the library's complete A-to-Z title list to be certain that a particular periodical is not owned by the library. In addition, patrons should be certain that an article is not available full text in NC LIVE. Requests may take 10-14 days to fill. Patrons are requested to submit requests early enough to give the ILL staff enough time to order the materials they need. The patron is responsible for any cost above the first $5. In some cases, the library may not be able to request an article due to compliance with federal copyright law. Patrons are responsible for returning books borrowed through ILL by the due date listed on the label affixed to the front of each book. Due dates on ILL books will vary. Overdue fines for ILL books are $1.00 per day per item. No renewals are allowed. If an ILL item becomes overdue, the borrower is expected to pay the fine. If an ILL book is lost, the patron is expected to pay for the replacement of the item. This charge may include up to $15 in fines, plus the actual cost that is charged to us by the lending library. Circulation Department The Circulation Desk is located on the main floor of Dover Library.
The desk is staffed all hours that the library is open. In order
to check out library materials, a student must present a valid
picture University ID. Patrons MAY NOT check out materials for
another person or use another
person's ID.
If a book listed as available in MAX is not on the shelf, a staff member can put a trace on the item. When the item is found, you will be notified. If a book is checked out, the circulation staff can put a hold on it so that the person who has the item must return it at the end of the loan period and cannot renew it. The book will be held, and you will be notified that it is available. You will have three days to pick up the item or it will be returned to the shelf or held for the next patron who requested the item. In addition to checkout a number of other services are available at the Circulation Desk: Circulating laptopsThe library now has four wireless laptops available for checkout (for 3-hour, in-library use only) to GWU students, faculty, and staff members. (These circulating laptops are completely separate from the AudioVisual Department laptops which students and faculty can check out for use in classroom presentations, off-campus events, etc.) Each laptop comes equipped with Microsoft Office Professional 2003 (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access). Click here for more information. The library's circulating laptops were purchased with a grant from the Dover Foundation. ReservesProfessors place books, articles, videos, CDs, tests, and other materials on reserve at the Circulation Desk. These items may be checked out for three hours, one day, or three days, depending on the loan period requested by the instructor. Patrons must present their ID's to check out reserve materials. A maximum of two reserve items may be checked out at one time. Three-hour reserve items must be used in the library, and all reserve items begin accruing fines the minute that they become overdue.Transaction cardsBlank T-cards for the network laser printer, photocopiers, and microfilm/fiche readers are available at the Circulation Desk. You may add money to your card at any time using one of the two coin/card reader machines located inside the library (one beside the photocopier in the main floor circulation area and the other beside the photocopier on the third floor). T-cards do not expire, and any unused copies may be used at a later date. Note that the laser printer, which is networked to the library's OPAC terminals, can only be used with a T-card. Patrons cannot print articles from it and then pay at the desk.PhotocopiersCopiers are available on the main floor and on the top floor. Copies are 5 cents a page for both regular and legal size copies; change is available at the Circulation Desk.Book dropA book drop is available near the library entrance for patrons to return items after library hours.
Like most libraries, the library at Gardner-Webb University
has checkout policies and fine schedules. A patron must have
a valid ID card to check out any type of item. The following
schedule is for students of GWU:
*renewable GRACE PERIOD: Main and Nonprint Collections--7 days; 3 Hour Reserves--15 minutes Reference materials, Periodicals, and Special Collections do not circulate and must be used in the library only. There is no limit to the number of main and nonprint collection items that may be checked out; however, reserve items are limited, as shown above. If items become overdue, students are expected to pay the late charges. When a patron has overdue items or over $5 in accumulated fines, the patron may not check out any other material from the library until the items are returned and the fines paid. It is important to watch the time carefully or expect to pay a late fine when you return the item to the Circulation Desk! Patrons must pay for lost items. This charge may include up to $15 in overdue fines, $15 for a replacement/processing fee, plus the actual cost of the item lost. Fines for 3-hour reserve items, which may not leave the library, may accrue up to $36. Main and nonprint collection items may be renewed for 3 weeks. Items may only be renewed once. When in doubt about circulation policies or fines, ask at the Circulation Desk. The library staff will be glad to answer your questions. Periodicals Gardner-Webb
Library has
access to more than 12,000 periodicals (newspapers, magazines,
and academic or professional journals) in both print and electronic formats.
Periodicals in print are housed on the top floor of the library and are stored
in four formats: loose issues, bound journals, microfilm,
and microfiche. All of the periodicals in Dover Memorial Library are
non-circulating.
Periodicals are shelved alphabetically. Those in paper format (bound and loose issues) are shelved on the main periodical shelves. Microfilm and microfiche are shelved in the cabinets in the microforms area, along with the ERIC Documents. To locate information on a periodical title, please refer to MAX or to the library's complete A-to-Z title list. Microform readersThe library has three microform readers: one for microfilm, one for microfiche, and one for both microfilm and microfiche. One machine must be logged on using your MyWebb username/password for saving, digitizing, emailing, or printing. Print jobs are directed to the OPAC printer on the main floor at five cents per page. Copies from the other two microform readers are ten cents per page; one machine takes dimes only, while the other accepts copy cards (available at the Circulation Desk). Please ask a librarian for assistance if you've never used either microfilm or microfiche before. Indexes and AbstractsIn addition to the periodicals, indexes and abstracts in paper are also housed on the top floor of the library.Because not all articles are online, there are situations in which a print index or abstract can be more useful than an online or electronic index. This is particularly true when seeking articles to journals more than a few years old, or when looking for information in an area not covered by an electronic database. An index is simply a list of articles from a selected group of periodicals. In most cases, you can look up articles by subject or author. Sometimes you will even find a brief description, an abstract, of the article. If you need help using an index, or are not sure which one would be appropriate to use for your topic, please ask a librarian for assistance. Audio-Visual Services Daytime hours Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Evening hours* *Evening hours may vary depending on availability of student workers.*The Listening/Viewing Room is open the same hours as the library. If you have been assigned to watch a video or make a poster, or if you need to make an interesting classroom presentation, you will want to visit the Dover Library's Audio-Visual Department, also known as Media Services. At the AV Office, a qualified assistant can laminate materials, make color copies/transparencies (for school projects), or comb-bind reports for you. Please allow sufficient lead time for such requests. If you have a deadline, please bring your materials by 12:00 noon one day prior to your deadline. Equipment available for checkout includes video cameras, tripods, video tape players, cassette recorders, overhead projectors, and other equipment. Multimedia projectors and laptops can be reserved for classroom presentations. Please call ahead to reserve equipment and to schedule a time to learn how to operate it prior to your presentation. In the Listening/Viewing Room you can watch DVDs/videos or listen to CDs, records, or cassette tapes. This room is open the same hours as the library. If you need any help with the equipment we will be glad to assist you. The Production Lab is the ideal area to work on projects for clubs, dorm rooms, or classroom presentations. There you will find space and materials to make a collage, design a poster, mount pictures, and make a bulletin board. Available for use is the Ellison Letter Machine, which can cut letters in a fraction of the time that it takes to cut them with scissors. Also, there is an opaque projector that can enlarge various graphics. During AV office hours, we have bulletin board paper and borders, construction paper, poster board, mount board, and other supplies for sale. A list of current prices is available. The Production Lab is kept locked; ask for assistance in the AV office. If you have any questions, feel free to call the AV Department at extension 4291. Government Documents
An increasing number of government documents are now available online. Refer to our Government Online page for links to government departments at the federal and state levels. The U.S. government's official web portal is USA.gov; this site is designed to be the primary, centralized resource for finding any information from local, state, and/or federal Government Agency websites. Church Curriculum Lab
Formerly called the Baptist Curriculum Lab, this collection has curriculum materials used by several Christian denominations. It is located on the top floor of the library. For more information, please inquire at the Circulation Desk.
