Israel: The Holy Land
DAY 1, FRI, MAR 12 Departure from the States on our transatlantic flight to Tel Aviv. (meals aloft) DAY 2, SAT, MAR 13 Arrive in Tel Aviv. We proceed to the coastal city ruins of Caesarea, ancient capital of Roman Palestine, and see the theater, aqueduct, recently-excavated hippodrome (which could seat over 20,000 people), and Crusader fortress. On top of Mount Carmel we see the traditional site of Elijah's battle with the prophets of Baal. Here, we also enjoy the sweeping panoramic view of the Jezreel Valley from atop the mountain. We continue to Tiberias and the Kibbutz Nof Ginosar on the Sea of Galilee for dinner and overnight. (meals aloft, D) DAY 3, SUN, MAR 14 After a visit to the Mount of Beatitudes, we travel north to the foothills of Mount Hermon and Banias (Caesarea Philippi), where Jesus said, “I will build my church...” We return to Tabgha, the traditional site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes, and Magdala, home of Mary Magdalene. A highlight of the day will be a lunch of St. Peter's fish at Kibbutz Ein Gev. After a memorable boat ride on the Sea of Galilee we visit the ruins of ancient Capernaum where the greater part of Jesus’ ministry of teaching and healing took place. There we see the ancient synagogue and the excavations of Peter’s mother-in-law’s house. We return to the Kibbutz Nof Ginosar to see the 1st-century "Jesus Boat," which was discovered in 1986 partially buried in the muddy shores of the Sea of Galilee. (B,L,D) DAY 4, MON, MAR 15 We travel to Nazareth, boyhood home of Jesus, for a visit to Mary’s Well at St. Gabriel's Church. We tour Nazareth Village, the only enterprise of its kind dedicated to illuminating the life of Jesus through an authentically constructed first-century town and restored ancient farm. Here the stories of Jesus' childhood, ministry, and teaching are retold with elements of everyday life re-enacted. We see Cana, the site of Jesus' first miracle, the changing of water to wine. Then we tour Sepphoris, traditional home of Anna and Joachim (the parents of Mary, mother of Jesus), and Mary's birthplace. We stop a baptismal site on the River Jordan before returning to Tiberias for dinner and overnight. (B,D) DAY 5, TUE, MAR 16 We visit the ruins of Megiddo, the Biblical Armageddon, and see Ahab’s stables and the famous water system. We travel on to Bet She'an, Israel's largest active archaeological dig site, and see the Roman theater, built in the second century. It is one of the largest and best preserved ancient theaters in the entire Middle East. We drive south through the Jordan River valley and past New Testament Jericho, believed to have been at the mouth of the Wadi Kelt, where Herod had his winter palace. From here we can see the Mount of Temptation. Then to Jerusalem, the "Holy City," for dinner and overnight at the Legacy Hotel. (B,D) DAY 6, WED, MAR 17 We travel past the Hebrew University and on to the Mount of Olives. We walk down the traditional “Palm Sunday Walk” where Christ made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, stopping at the Garden of Gethsemane with its ancient olive trees and the Church of All Nations. In the Old City we visit St. Anne's Church and the Pools of Bethesda, and then we follow the Via Dolorosa, seeing Pilate’s Judgment Hall where Christ was imprisoned and concluding at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. We travel to Bethlehem (political situation permitting) and the Church of the Nativity, built over the traditional site of the birth of Christ. We drive by the Field of Shepherds, where the angel announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds, and return to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight. (B,D) DAY 7, THU, MAR 18 We drive east towards Jericho and then turn south and travel along the shore of the Dead Sea. We visit Masada (now a UNESCO World Heritage site) and ascend by cable car to visit the magnificent ruins of the fortress where Jewish defenders made the last stand of the Judean revolt against the Romans. We stop at the oasis of Ein Gedi, where David hid from Saul and chose to spare his life. Continuing along the Dead Sea we arrive at Qumran and see the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. Return to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight. (B,D) DAY 8, FRI, MAR 19 We begin our day with a visit to Mount Zion and the Room of the Last Supper. In the Jewish Quarter we see the Cardo, Jerusalem’s main thoroughfare during Roman and Byzantine times. At the Temple area we view the Western Wall. We then visit the Davidson Center, situated at the entrance to the Jerusalem Archaeological Park, one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in the country. Nearby are the “Southern Steps” leading to the original entrance to the temple mount and to the Second Temple. It is certain that Jesus climbed these steps when he visited the temple in Jerusalem. We see the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament building, and visit the Shrine of the Book, which houses the original Dead Sea Scrolls. We end our day at Gordon’s Calvary and the Garden Tomb, where in an inspiring service we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. Following dinner, we transfer to the airport for our flight home.
