Your English major at Gardner-Webb University offers four different emphases: pre-professional, education, general writing, professional writing, and creative writing.

Undergraduate English

English major with a Pre-Professional Emphasis

From a variety of experiences, you will develop a strong liberal arts base useful for entry into professional areas such as law, ministry, medicine, and business or into graduate studies. You’ll take courses in American literature, British literature, world literature, and literary criticism, and write a thesis as a capstone project.

 

English major with a Writing Emphasis

An English major with a writing emphasis will prepare you for a career or advanced study in writing.

 

General Writing

With a General Writing emphasis, you’ll take courses in literature, advanced composition, creative writing, and professional writing. You’ll also build your portfolio by working on the staff of a university publication such as our literary magazine (The Broad River Review) or the student newspaper, completing a writing internship, writing a thesis.

 

Professional Writing

With a Professional Writing emphasis, you’ll take courses in literature, advanced composition, professional writing, and feature writing. You’ll also build your portfolio by working on the staff of a university publication and writing a thesis.

 

Creative Writing

With a Creative Writing emphasis, you’ll take courses in literature, advanced composition, creative writing, poetry writing, fiction writing, and literary criticism. You’ll also build your portfolio by working on the staff of the University’s literary magazine (The Broad River Review) and writing a thesis.
