Degree Completion Program

Your major in Elementary Education at Gardner-Webb University will prepare you to teach students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. The curriculum offers instruction in the broad spectrum of topics, giving you the toolkit you’ll need to excel in the classroom.


The online program curriculum consists of three semesters of coursework and field experiences (49 hours) with the fourth semester consisting of a student teaching experience (12 hours). You will take twelve or more hours each semester plus six hours during the summer semester.  All classes can be taken in an online format.


You’ll learn about the developmental stages children experience from ages five through twelve. You’ll study the learning characteristics of students from various cultural backgrounds and explore the unique needs of exceptional students. You’ll acquire useful techniques and strategies for the classroom and develop stronger skills in communication and personal relationships. You’ll learn through hands-on field experiences in real-life elementary classrooms.


Your major in Elementary Education requires courses in the fine arts, math, music, physical education, social studies education, and science education in order to give you a comprehensive background in core academic subjects to better equip you to handle the many questions bound to come your way.

As an Elementary Education student at GWU, you will have the opportunity to gain a variety of hands-on experience with fieldwork in the local school system. Your undergraduate education will culminate in a student teaching experience in a local elementary school.



Upon completing a degree in Elementary Education, you will have fulfilled the requirements for a North Carolina Class A Teaching Licensure. You will be fully prepared to teach K-6 grade in North Carolina.



Graduates of Gardner-Webb's Elementary Education program are employed by schools throughout North Carolina.
