Middle Grades Education
Your major in Middle Grades Education will give you the knowledge and expertise to succeed as an educator of middle grade students.
Through the comprehensive curriculum in teacher education and liberal arts, you’ll develop key skills needed to be an effective teacher. You’ll study the unique learning needs of adolescents, and how they influence the middle school classroom. You’ll learn how to design and adapt a curriculum for a diverse group of learners and working with those who have special learning needs. You’ll learn how to effectively communicate with parents, colleagues, and community members to build strong partnerships.
You’ll also gain a strong background in liberal arts, solidifying your knowledge of language arts, social studies, science, and math.

As a Middle Grades Education student at GWU, you will have the opportunity to gain a variety of hands-on experiences with fieldwork in the local school system. Your undergraduate education will culminate in a student teaching experience in a public middle school.
Upon completing a degree in Middle Grades Education, you will have fulfilled the requirements for a North Carolina Class A Teaching License. You will be fully prepared to teach grades 6-9 in North Carolina.
