French with Teacher Licensure

Your major in French will introduce you to the compelling world of Francophone languages, literature, and culture and give you the skills to share this information with students in your classroom. You will develop advanced fluency, explore the history of Francophone cultures, and delve into the literature of various periods and regions. With proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing, you’ll enjoy great opportunities for travel, fascinating career options, and higher earning potential. You will experience French language and culture in a whole new way through our study abroad programs in Canada and France. This will be the start to a career that may take you across the globe.


With the Professional Education minor, you’ll gain the knowledge and tools to become a French teacher for K-12 students. You’ll learn about current standards of foreign language instruction, learning methods for teaching and techniques for classroom success, and effective communication of foreign language knowledge in the classroom. Through field teaching assignments and coaching from an experienced French teacher, you’ll apply these skills through real-world practice.


Study Abroad

As a French major, you’ll have exciting opportunities to study abroad. We offer summer study programs at the University of Quebec. We also work individually with students who want to study abroad in other French-speaking locations. Study abroad scholarships are also available.



As part of the Mosaic Club, you’ll have the opportunity to further explore the French language and Francophone cultures through volunteerism and service learning.


Student NC Association of Educators

This student organization helps you develop your professional abilities and provides you with important networking and leadership opportunities.


Table Française

This weekly gathering allows you a fun, informal setting to practice French, eat French cuisine, and learn French games.


Pi Delta Phi

The National French Honor Society Pi Delta Phi recognizes outstanding scholarship in French language and literature and works to increase appreciation of French culture. To be eligible for membership, you must complete a 300-level French course and maintain a GPA of at least 2.8.


French Award

Each year the French professors nominate an outstanding senior majoring in French on the basis of academic achievement.



As part of the Teacher Education program, you will complete a field teaching assignment in a number of different classroom environments with a 15-week assignment as a student teacher your final semester at GWU. You will work with an experienced educator who will serve as your coach as you develop real-life teaching skills.



Your degree in French and the language proficiency you acquire will prepare you for exciting opportunities in many fields. A minor in business, social sciences, or teacher education will expand your job options.



Our alumni are pursuing graduate study and rewarding careers and making a positive impact wherever they go. They have gone on to pursue higher education at places like UNC Chapel Hill and Boston University. Many are traveling or living abroad in France, Africa, French Guyana, and one is even teaching in Korea.
