Veterans' Enrollment Procedures


Depending on your type of service or chapter, there are specific requirements and forms you must submit in order to start receiving benefits.  Please select (click) the link of the appropriate chapter below to find out more about how to start benefits at GWU. Montgomery GI Bill - (Chapter 30)

  • Students must apply and be accepted into a degree program at GWU before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (VA will not pay for classes in the Lifelong or Continuing Education Program)
  • Student must complete VA Form 22-1990 for the initial application or VA Form 22-1995 if they have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their DD-214 discharge papers. They do not need to provide their DD-214 if they have received Chapter 30 benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of:
    • 1. High School Transcript or GED. (undergraduates only)
    • 2. All College Transcripts.
  • If you are transferring credit from another institution, you must provide our office with a copy of your transcript.

Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606)

  • Students must apply and be accepted into a degree program at GWU before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (VA will not pay for classes in the Lifelong or Continuing Education Program)
  • Student must complete VA Form 22-1990 for the initial application or VA Form 22-1995 if they have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Student must provide our office with a completed DD-Form 22-2384, Notice of Basic eligibility (NOBE). They do not need to provide their DD-2384 if they have received Chapter 1606 benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their DD-214 discharge papers. They do not need to provide their DD-214 if they have received Chapter 30 benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of:
    • 1. High School Transcript or GED. (undergraduates only)
    • 2. All College Transcripts.
  • If you are transferring credit from another institution, you must provide our office with a copy of your transcript.

Survivors' and Dependants' (Chapter 35)

  • Students must apply and be accepted into a degree program at GWU before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (VA will not pay for classes in the Lifelong or Continuing Education Program)
  • Student must complete VA Form 22-5490 if this is your initial application or VA Form 22-5495 if you have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of:
    • 1. High School Transcript or GED. (undergraduates only)
    • 2. All College Transcripts.
  • If you are transferring credit from another institution, you must provide our office with a copy of your transcript.

New Voc-Rehab/Continuing Voc-Rehab students

  • New: Call 1-800-827-1000
  • Continuing: Contact your Counselor. (Winston-Salem: 336-631-5451)

Montgomery GI Bill - REAP (Chapter 1607)

  • Students must apply and be accepted into a degree program at GWU before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA 
  • Students must complete VA Form 22-1990  if this is your initial application or VA Form 22-1995 if you have previously received VA benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Student must provide the VA office with a DD- 214 member 4 copy. You do not need to provide  DD-214  if you have received Chapter 1607 benefits at another institution. 
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of:
    • 1. High School Transcript or GED. (undergraduates only)
    • 2. All College Transcripts.
  • If you are transferring credit from another institution, you must provide our office with a copy of your transcript.

Montgomery GI Bill - Post 9/11 NEW GI Bill (Chapter 33)

  • Students must apply and be accepted into a degree program at GWU before they can begin receiving benefits from the VA. (VA will not pay for classes in the Lifelong or Continuing Education Program)
  • Student must complete VA Form 22-1990  if this is your initial application or if you are electing this new MGIB instead of your current MGIB chapter or VA Form 22-1995 if you have previously received Chapter 33 benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of their Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Student must provide the VA office with a copy of their DD-214 discharge papers. You do not need to provide your DD-214 if you have received Chapter 33 benefits at another institution.
  • Student must provide our office with a copy of:
    • 1. High School Transcript or GED. (undergraduates only)
    • 2. All College Transcripts.
  • If you are transferring credit from another institution, you must provide our office with a copy of your transcript.
