Studying a foreign language can be very enjoyable and help you succeed in a wide variety of fields. More and more companies are beginning to work in the international market, and they are setting up plants in other countries. According to the Modern Language Association, a second language is necessary in more than sixty occupations. Plus, having the knowledge of a second language looks great on jo applications and makes you more marketable after graduation.
Also, according to the Modern Language Association, studying a foreign language can help improve your skills and grades in English and mathematics. It can also improve your analytical and interpretative skills. Your entrance exam scores may also be higher (GRE, MCAT, LSAT).
Furthermore, you will be able to travel much more easily in a foreign country if you know a little bit about the culture, people and language. You will probably become more open-minded and have a better understanding of people and cultures other than your own.
The mission of the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is to teach students communicative skills in a world language through a curriculum which emphasizes a liberal arts philosophy and Christian values and, ultimately, produces graduates who have an appreciation and knowledge of another culture its language, and its literature.
