Flu Advisory Update

Flu Status On Campus

Gardner-Webb University has experienced a small increase in the number of residential students and staff reporting flu-like symptoms over the last six weeks. Since August 2009, approximately 70 cases of possible flu have been reported by students or staff connected with the Boiling Springs campus. Most of those have occurred over the last 14 days. We have received no reports of hospitalization connected with flu or flu-like illnesses. Because of the limited number of cases, there has been no disruption of class schedules or campus events.

Physicians and clinics nationally are no longer routinely administering the H1N1 flu test. Consequently, there is no way to verify how many of these reported cases are H1N1, seasonal flu, or even other similar ailments such as upper respiratory infections. Nevertheless, the University continues to monitor the situation and to take steps to provide the appropriate assistance to any member of the Gardner-Webb community who finds him or herself sick. Regardless of whether one contracts the seasonal flu or the H1N1 flu, the recommended treatment is the same—bed rest, fluid intake, and over-the-counter anti-fever medications other than aspirin. If symptoms become severe it is important to seek medical care.

Guidelines have been provided to students, faculty and staff alike which include recommendations on flu-prevention and the appropriate steps to take in the event of illness. The University continues to encourage students and staff alike to report illnesses which might reasonably be the flu so that the University can maintain appropriate preparedness in the event the number of cases should escalate. Residential students are asked to notify their Resident Assistants. Non-residential students should notify at least one of their professors. Employees should notify their supervisors.

Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
